Sweet Grass School
S. D. # 2892 - SW 20-16-29

On June 10, 1912, a petition to form a S. D. was signed by L. S. Nixon, J. R. Nixon, and Wm. Nixon. In August of that year a letter was sent suggesting these names for the S. D.: Lake View, Rose Hill, Hill Top, Bellvue, Sweet Grass. The last-named was approved. After some dispute, the exact boundaries were settled in 1913.

The location of the school was the SW corner of the SW 20-16-29. It was opened in August, 1913, with Miss Sadie Spidell as teacher, and 10 pupils, with the enrolment increasing by 6 more within a few months.

Sweet Grass school closed in 1949 - there being only 5 pupils left. Some of these went to high school in Moose Jaw, others were absorbed into neighbouring schools. Change was coming, in that the schools were being consolidated and the children being taken by bus to central points.

The school building is gone from the hilltop. It was sold and moved to Old Wives. The prairie has taken over once again the spot where it stood.
