 Schools in the Caron Municipality

A long time ago when people brought up large families in little houses with no running water, Saskatchewan families did their shopping in little stores in nearby villages, hauled their wheat to country elevators and sent their kids off to rural schoolhouses on foot or on a horse-drawn cart (right: A young Ralph "Cully" Wilson off to school with his sisters at Caron Prairie School). Today, those few people who still live in rural areas do their shopping at Super Stores in the city, send their crops off in a semi-trailer to a super elevator and put their kids on a school bus to get their education in a big school some distance away.

In those early days education was close to home. In fact, in the beginning it was often in the home where parents taught their own children and sometimes an older child taught younger ones from the same and other families. When the number of children warranted it, people living in the rural areas formed school districts, built school houses and set out to attract a teacher. Some of those early schools became too small for the growing population and were closed in favour of larger buildings. There were at one time or another a total of 13 schools in the Caron R. M. and 14 if you count the Boharm school which was attended by students from the east end of the municipality. Follow the links opposite to find out more about the schools listed.
