One of the province's early school districts was Caron S. D. #52 established April 13, 1886. The schoolhouse stood in a field now lying between the Trans-Canada Highway andthe Trans-Canada Pipeline, north of Caron. The schoolhouse closed May 4, 1888, for some now-forgotten reason, but "book learning" was carried on in the nearby farm home of Chas. Colenutt, whose12 year old daughter, Flora, took on teaching duties. circa 1919 By May 12, 1890, the
Caron School was again in business but the
schoolhouse had been moved a mile north of the
old site, approximately in the middle of Sec.
1. Later, this building was bought by Alex
Bankier. 1920
In 1904, the boundaries of the S. D. were changed so the school (called Nord) in Caron town could have more taxable lands. Caron town wished to use the name "Caron" not"Nord" so this district now was known as "Caron Prairie S. D. #52".
In 1921, two new schools, Pelican Lake and Grayburn were built and pupils left Caron Prairie School. In 1927 a new school was built so the old one was sold to Caron Literary Society. This school closed in 1945 and was taken to Keeler to serve as a teacherage. |
