NE corner of NE 23-16-29 On July 27, 1912, a petition for the organization of a S. D. in the LID #162 was signed by Robert Thompson, Cliff Hurlburt and Fred McIntyre; and asked that it include these lands:Sections 10 to 15, 22 to 27, 34 to 36 of Twp. 16, Rge 29, andSections 7, 18, and 19 of Twp. 16, Rge.28. There followed some months of dispute over the western boundary, but by the fall of 1913 the boundaries had been approved by the now R. M. of Caron#162, as requested, except for Section 19-16-28 which was on the eastern boundary. A letter was sent to the
Minister of Education by Mr. Preville, then
secretary of the school board, suggestingthe
following school names: Homestead, Golden
Rule, Breezy Point, Royal George, Highland.
Perhaps a circle around "Royal George"
indicated their preference - that name was
okayed. The school was built on the NE corner
of NE 23-16-29, which was the homestead of
George and Sarah McIntyre. It was completed and furnished byFeb. 1915, and school opened with Miss Frances Botting as its first teacher, and 16 pupils. 1916 1950s The school was
in continuous operation from1915 to 1941, when
it closed for lack of pupils, reopening in1949
until 1963, when pupils were then bused to
Moose Jaw. The S. D. had joined the Moose Jaw
School Unit #22 in 1951. The schoolhouse was
sold by the School Unit Board to Vic Willis,
and now is an outbuilding on the Ray Willis
farm (shown below in 2000).
The School Unit turned the school grounds back to the present owner of the land surrounding it, Allen McIntyre. Below is the site in 2000. |
