Westview Church

In 1898, James Shier, of Bracebridge, Ont., became concerned about the spiritual welfare of the settlers who were going west on the trains which passed his home daily. He offered a monthly support, a tent, and camp stools to anyone who would volunteer to take the gospel to these people. Rev. Wm. H. Wilson of the West Ontario Conference of the Free Methodist Church took up the offer and came West to Sintaluta. His attempts to begin work there failed and he came to Boharm where Robert Elsom lived. While holding services in the Pioneer School he met Ted (Edwin) Robson of the Westview District who said his father had been a Free Methodist in Michigan. Mr. Wilson called at the Robson home and received permission to hold services in the school house.

Mr. Wilson secured a small house near Jake Deyo's at Boharm and held meetings at various points. He began a revival meeting at Westview School in the winter of 1899-1900 which continued for six weeks. He drove ten miles every night, sometimes lighting the fire. After several weeks he became discouraged. One night Mrs. Wilson had a dream. She seemed to be trying to dig a well in very hard ground and was almost at the point of quitting, when suddenly she broke through the hardpan and struck plenty of water. "Will, that's Westview, we'll have to keep on! " she insisted in the morning. Her husband was therefore encouraged to keep on.

The first society was formed in March 1900 and was composed of: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Robson, Edwin and Grace; Mrs. A.W. Tanner; Mrs. Bill McNabb; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nesbitt, Merton, Ida and Reginald; Mrs. Joe Thompson; Robert Elsom; Mrs. Sarah Green; and Jennie Wilson (W. H. Wilson's sister). Mr. Wilson was also holding meetings at Moose Jaw and Caron Prairie and sent east for reinforcements. Rev. J.W. Haley came in 1900 to take over the Westview work. Meetings there and at Caron Prairie school house produced more members -- Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Brown, A.W. Tanner, Mr. and Mrs. Heman Hurlburt, Chas. Young, and 3 McBride families.

Rev. Haley left for Africa in 1902 and Rev. F.M. Wees came west to fill the vacancy. Rev. Wees, with local help, built the parsonage and in 1905 the church. He became District Elder in 1906, and Rev. Wilson came back to pastor the work he had begun. Westview became the spring board for other societies. Money was sent for the beginnings of many Free Methodist Churches in southern Saskatchewan. Conference met here twice with Bishop Hague and Bishop Pearce. Many prominent preachers filled the pulpit until 1964 when the church was closed because of members moving to larger centres.

In 1959 the parsonage was moved to become the home of Frank and Jean Mercer, and in the late '60's the church was moved to Arlington Beach to be restored and become a memorial as the first Free Methodist Church in Western Canada.
