William Johnstone Milne
William
Johnstone Milne was born in 1892 in Cambusnethan,
near Wishaw, in Scotland. In 1910 he arrived
in Caron and took up employment on a farm owned by
John Kirkland, on the western edge of the Caron
Municipality. With war raging in Europe,
Milne walked the 40 kilometres to Moose Jaw to
enrol in the 46th Battalion and in 1916 he was
shipped overseas. There he was transferred
to a Highland outfit, the 16th Battalion, and in
April of 1917 Milne was involved in the Battle of
Vimy Ridge. On two occasions he single-handedly
destroyed two machine gun emplacements thereby
saving the lives of fellow soldiers who were being
fired upon. For this Milne was one of only
16 Canadian soldiers to be awarded the Victoria
Cross. Milne didn’t however survive the day
and his remains were never recovered. His
achievement is recognised by a plaque that stands
near the entrance to the farm where he worked
before going to war.
Railway
Avenue in Caron has been renamed in his honour.
