Councillor Colin Lambert, Leader
of Rochdale Borough Council said in 2013 that, “Rochdale’s
transformation is well and truly underway. The
interchange is yet another top class development
which will deliver facilities of the highest
quality for residents and visitors alike.
Its location, next door to the iconic Number One
Riverside Library and council offices building
and opposite the Metrolink terminus, is ideal
and it will make coming to Rochdale town centre
easier than ever”. The new
bus station element of the interchange was the first
of its kind in Europe to use integrated hydro power,
A hydroelectric turbine was installed next to
the interchange site which converts energy from the
river as it flows rapidly through a weir producing
up to 86,000kWh of electricity every year, reducing
the interchange’s carbon footprint by over a
quarter.
The building's architects say that,
"... this new interchange has been well received
by the public, providing a step change from the
existing bus station. Reviews with accessibility
groups, engaged throughout the process, have been
positive. Architecturally, the building sits
impressively against the River Roch and completed
council offices, now facilitating the remaining
stage to redevelop the existing bus station and
extend the town centre towards the interchange."
The Metrolink station sits across
the street from the bus station. The Greater
Manchester Light Railway system opened this station in
October of 2014.
