The Encyclopedia Britannica describes John Bright as a, "... British reform politician and orator active in the early Victorian campaigns for British reform, politician and orator active in the early Victorian campaigns for free trade and lower grain prices (he was a co-founder of the Anti-Corn Law League), as well as campaigns for parliamentary reform."  This statue of him once stood in the town hall square but now sits on a prominant site beside the entrance to the town centre by way of The Esplanade. Bright died in 1889 and the statue, designed by Hamor Thornycroft, was erected October 1891.  The statue stands on a tapering square pedestal with cornice and moulded base.
