Manchester
Aquatic Centre
Located on Oxford Road just south of the
city centre and close to the University of
Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University
is The Manchester Aquatics Centre. Built to
host the swimming and diving events at the 2002
Commonwealth Games it boasts two 50 metre swimming
pools, the world's largest area of moveable floors
and booms which can be reconfigured to form pools
of varying size and depth, and a brand new fitness
studio. After the games it became a valuable
community resource and offers access on both a
casual, 'pay as you go', basis and through
memberships
The building's architect, Faulkner Browns says of it that, "The success of the design is based on a very simple asymmetrical cross-section of the building which allows a formal entrance elevation to address the new square with a more modest scale to the residential buildings." Close Window |
