Number One First Street

Number One First Street is an office building beside Medlock Street on the site of the former Gaythorn Gas Works.  After the gas works was cleared, an office building was erected.  Initially it was a grey clad structure designed by P. Shuttleworth of Building Design Partnership for the British Council and completed in 1991.  At that point it was called Grand Island.  Subsequently the British Council moved out of Manchester and in 1997 British Telecom became the occupant.  The grey clad building was transformed into the structure we see today.  That process can be seen in the images below, shown with the generous permission of Nick Grayson.

The images below show the transformation.

In 2010 new residents moved into "Number One".  Manchester City Council were embarking on a refurbishment of the Town Hall Extension and the Central Library so they moved 1,400 staff into the building until the work was completed.

In 2015 Number One First Street sits at the heart of a new £500m developments that includes the Home Arts Centre, a new hotel, a retail/restaurant building and a multi-storey car park.

At that time, marketing information for the building said that it offered, "... Approximately 180,000 sq ft of Grade A BREEAM ‘Excellent’ office accommodation, in the finest setting of any office building in Manchester.  Natural light floods through to all floors via a stunning central full height atrium."  It added that there were, "... Plans to create an amazing focal point with the installation of Europe’s largest living green walls to the rear elevation adjoining the main square."
