First Street Car Park

This 700 space multi-storey car park, operated by QPark is located on a former brownfield site that was once home to the Gaythorn Gas Works.  It is part of a group of buildings designed by the Manchester based architectural practice of SimpsonHaugh and Partners.  The other elements are the Innside Hotel and a retail/restaurant building beside Medlock Street.  The car park has an eye-catching gold face which becomes even more eye-catching at night when it features a fluctuating light display.

There are retail units at street level including a brew house / restaurant appropriately named "Gasworks" since it sits on the site of the Gaythiorn Gas Works.

Planning documents described the building as follows:  "... The building structure would be ‘wrapped’ in a coloured perforated aluminium skin which would create an ‘image’ above ground floor level and feature a multimedia wall incorporating a large projection screen on the west elevation facing the new public square. The screen would be illuminated by a large state of the art digital cinema projector which would be located within the Cultural Facility and would be equipped with motion sensors, a sound system and motion capture video cameras enabling it be be used in many and varied interactive modes. When not in use the screen would ‘disappear’ behind a media façade moving display of small LED lights."
