357 - 361 Deansgate - the former "The Old Pack Horse" pub

This red brick building with terracotta decoration occupies the corner of Deansgate and Commercial Street.  It is part of a block of buildings that in 1851 included the Old Pack Horse public house, a Letter Receiving Office and a row of dwellings on the Gilbert Street side.  The Old Pack Horse that occupied the building in 1851 was demolished and replaced by this brick version in 1890.

Below is my version of a map of this site from the 1940s.  By this time the Gilbert Street houses were described as being in a ruinous condition.  A Corn Mill occupied the corner of Deansgate and Little Peter Street.  Engineers and Electricians occupied 357 Deansgate.  Eventually the Old Pack Horse pub occupied 357 and 361 before it was recently closed and the whole site converted into apartments and offices.

You can see the block in the aerial photograph below, dated 1953.  The red arrow indicates the Old Pack Horse pub.

The newly developed complex is described as follow on its Facebook site, "Tucked behind Deansgate station, you wouldn't notice this small block unless you were looking for it. Part Victorian conversion, part new-build, 357 Deansgate is one of the smallest and most intimate developments in this much sought-after area. It's nicely finished too, with good-quality communal spaces, and nice views across these quiet streets. The apartments at the front of the building have high ceilings and powder-grey sash windows, whilst the ones at the rear have wide patio doors and Juliet balconies. We really like this part of town, it's peaceful at weekends and right next to Atlas Bar too!"
