City South - City Road East

City South is a large apartment complex that occupies a site bounded by City Road East, Shortcroft Street, River Street and Garwood Street.  The Estate Agents describe it as a, "stunning Bellway development ... situated just a stroll away from Manchester's Deansgate Locks, and Deansgate Train Station which makes its location very convenient and extremely desirable. With a concierge, well-presented communal gardens and excellent living space....."

Previously, this whole area was more industrial and commercial than residential.  It featured warehouses and factories and was dominated by the Gaythorn Gas Works which sat beside Medlock Street.  This particular block was home, in the 1880s, to a tightly packed complex of buildings trading in electrical goods, stationary and printing, and the manufacturing of mantles.

It was also home to St. Mark's Church, on the corner of City Road East and what was Garner Street (now Garwood Street), and the related Sunday School and Hall, on River Street.  St. Mark's was built in 1847 and demolished in 1948.  You can see the Sunday School by clicking on the link below but by the time that photograph was taken the church was already gone.

The aerial image below was taken in May 1953 and it shows the block with a red-lined border.  The arrow points to the Sunday School building and the pink rectangle indicates the location of the former St. Mark's Church.
