Number 1 City Road

Albion Road runs southwards from Whitworth Street West under the railway viaduct and ,after the junction with City Road East, it becomes Medlock Street.  At the intersection with City Road East stands the office building known as Number 1 City Road.  The building is composed of four separate blocks each with a domed staircase tower that is clad in mirrored glass panels.

The building is the creation of CAD Architects who have their office not far away in the Albion Building on Albion Street.

Here is the site in 1953, shown below in an RAF aerial photograph.  I have enclosed the site with a red line.

My version of a 1920s map of this site, shown below, indicates that at that time it was a collection of timber yards.  The aerial photograph, above, suggests that it still was in 1953.
