The Picture House
The Picture House stands
on the corner of Oxford Street and Chepstow Street and,
as you can see, today it is a McDonald's. When it
was built in 1911 for the Provincial Cinematography
Theatres Company, it was indeed a picture
house. The images below show it when it was
called the Oxford Picture House.
(The image above is shown
with the permission of the Greater Manchester Police
Museum and Archive. If you click on this link you can see more
historic images from their Flickr
Photostream) As you can see, it used to have an
open square tower rising above the entrance.
Naylor and Sale were the
architects of what was one of the first purpose-built
cinemas in the city centre. It is built of red
brick with orange terracotta features. Apart from
the tower, the upper facade remains intact but at street
level has been transformed into modern retail! and
McDonalds occupies the site of the Joe Lyons coffee
house.
In 1927 the Picture House was
renamed the "New Oxford Theatre".
