St George's House

Between the Theater Royal and the Midland Hotel on the west side of Peter Street is the imposing St. George's Building covered in brown and buff terracotta and with St. George himself above the entrance.  It was designed by the architectural practice of Woodhouse, Corbett & Dean and completed in 1911.

This was the Manchester YMCA building and as such came equipped with a running track, gymnasium and swimming pool. Benefitting from the developments in reinforced concrete it had been possible to locate the swimming pool near the top of the building.

Today the St. George's Building is a modern office complex and according to the Manchester Pevsner all remnants of the YMCA facilities were removed in the redevelopment.
