Royal Central Hotel

The former Royal Central Hotel sits behind the Theatre Royal on Windmill Street between Museum Steet and South Street.  It was built circa 1850 and was originally called Theatre Royal Hotel, as you can see on the map below.

When Central Station was opened across the street in 1880, the hotel was renamed the Royal Central Hotel.

Today the hotel looks unused and boarded up.  An article in Skyscraper News dated the 18th of September, 2009, outlined the plans of the Benmore Group to build a 48 storey building on the site which would house a 280 room hotel and luxury apartments.  The plan, which was still on the drawing board at that time, also included a helipad.  The photograph above was taken in December of 2010 and clearly the redevelopment is still on hold.
