Central House - Atrium Dominion Apartments

Looking like a Scottish castle Central House stands beside the Rochdale Canal near the corner of Princess Street and Whitworth Street.

Designed by Corsen and Aitken in 1880 this red brick warehouse in what is referred to a Scottish Baronial style, was built for Galbraith and Co as a shipping warehouse, as you can see in my sketch from the 1888 plan shown below.

Below you can see the building in the 1960s.

It was converted into the Dominion Hotel in 1980.  Today it is part of the Bridge Street Worldwide chain of serviced apartments and is known as Atrium Dominion Apartments.  The company describes the facility as follows:  "At the Atrium Manchester we have 116 Serviced Apartments comprising of Studio, one and two bedroomed apartments.  Situated in the heart of Manchester, at the junction of Princess Street and Whitworth Street, The Atrium by BridgeStreet Worldwide boasts stylish serviced apartments allowing you the independence, space and privacy that only an apartment can offer, coupled with the security and comfort of a hotel perfect for business and leisure travellers alike."
