Portland Buildings - The Behrens Building

Curving around the corner of Oxford Street and Portland Street, the Portland Building was designed by the architect Philip Nunn.  It was built in 1860 for the Louis Behrens and Son company.  The building is four storeys high but has 23 bays on the Portland Street side.  In the 1970s a Barcays Bank occupied the corner of the block.

The final 5 bays on Oxford Street are framed in cast iron.  It is suggested that this may have been Mr. Behrens office.  In the 1970s this was the Koh-i-Nor Restaurant.

As you can see in the image below, taken in March of 2011, the portion of the building on the corner of Portland Street and Oxford Street is called "Oxford Place".  It also sports a Bruntwood sign, indicating that it is part of Bruntwood's fleet of office buildings in the city centre.
