Novotel Hotel - Portland Street



The Novotel Hotel occupies the corner of Portland Street and Dickinson Street.  It has its main entrance on Dickinson Street.  This building occupies a site that was once home to a 19th Century building that didn't survive the Manchester Blitz in December 1940.  The bombing and fires resulted in the destruction of almost the whole block between Princess Street and Dickinson Street, as you can see in the aerial photograph below, dated 1953.



In 1888, as you can see on my version of a map from that date, this block between Princess Street and Dickenson Street culminated in a building occupied by the Telephone Company.  Faulkner Street ran behind the block parallel to Portland Street.



The Novotel was built along Dickinson Street, closing off Faulkner Street, and then extending down St. James Street, as you can see below.
