Elliot House
I remember when Elliot
House was home to the Manchester Education
Commitee. Apparently it was also, at one time, a
registrar’s office, registering births, deaths and
marriages. The building was designed by Royle
& Bennet and built in 1878. One of its
impressive features is the oval windows on opposite
corners of the Deansgate front that are flanked by
beautiful sandstone carvings. Today Elliot House
is part of Bruntwood's stable of offices in the city
centre. They describe it as, "a self-contained
office ... with its own private entrance. It’s a fine
combination of fully refurbished, modern and
traditional offices, located in the heart of the city
centre."
************** In 2010 the Central
Library in Peter Square closed for
refurbishment. This work will keep the library
closed until 2013. In the interim Elliot House
has been converted into the City Library. Below
are some images of the inside.
**************** When I visited in November of 2015,
the library had long since moved back home. The
office space was "To Let" and a Gusto restaurant had
moved in.
