Royal Bank of Scotland - Mosley Street

The building that stretches along Moseley Street between York Street and Spring Gardens belongs, today, to the Royal Bank of Scotland.

It is in fact a number of buildings built by different architects for different banks. The block on the corner of York Street was originally the Manchester & Salford Bank which opened in 1862. It features a tall ground floor banking hall indicated from the outside by the tall windows. There is a balustrade around the top of the building with a series of stone urns and corner chimneys. The building's architect was Edward Walters the designer of the Free Trade Hall.

Separated from Walter's building by a lower entrance block is a matching structure by Barker and Ellis. It opened in the 1880s. The ground floor windows are different from those in its neighbour but the window pairs combine to light the ground floor.
