This is the original Kendal Milnes store designed by E. J. Thompson and built in 1872.  It  stands across Deansgate from the Art Deco second store that opened in 1939 and  now operates under the name of House of Fraser.  A good portion of this original building is now occupied by Waterstones.  When both buildings were used by Kendals an underpass  facilitated customers crossing from one to the other without facing the traffic on Deansgate.
