Griffin House, Lever
Street
Griffin House sits on Lever Street
in Manchester's Northern Quarter, between Houldsworth
Street and Faraday Street. Judging by its
architecture, this office block appears to date from
the 1960s or 1970s. When I took these images in
February of 2015, it was home to, among others, N
Brown, a British home shopping business.
In the mid 1800s the site was
occupied by two blocks of various buildings separated
by Warwick Street. Each block contained a
mixture of dwellings, industrial premises and
religious institutions. The building marked "A"
below was the Lever Street Chapel belonging to the
Wesleyan Methodists. The building marked "B" was
the Oldham Street Chapel School (Sunday School), also
belonging to the Wesleyans.
Little seems to have changed from
the time the map above was drawn and the aerial
photograph below was taken circa 1940.
