56 - 58 Oldham Street
![]() The Chase shop at 58
Oldham Street specializes in, "bulk
buying musical instruments overstocked by
manufacturers and distributors from all over the
world. So you get the pick of the world’s best
musical instruments at virtually wholesale prices."
When I took this image in February of 2011 it could
hardly be described as an inspiring building.
The "cladding on the facade hides the fact that it was
once two buildings.
![]() In the early years of
the 20th Century the red building next door was
occupied by a Marks and Spencer Penny Bazaar and
number 56 and 58 were incorporated into a shop owned
by Abel Heywood. The shop was an outlet for
stationary and Heywood's printing business. Abel
Heywood was a prominent Manchester businessman who was
the Lord Mayor of Manchester on two occassions, from
1862 - 1863 and 1876 - 1877. The clock bell that
you hear chiming from the Town Hall tower is called
Great Abel in his honour. If you click on the
link below you can see his store in 1910.
Abel
Heywood's shop - 1910
Heywood has a large
print shop behind the shop between Spear Street and
Lever Street. If you click on the link below
you can see a scene inside that building.
