Imperial Buildings

A block of 19th Century warehouses with street level restaurants can be found at the corner of High Street and Thomas Street.  On an 1888 map of the area the block was referred to as Imperial Buildings.  The block is made up of three component building with different architectural styles.  At the corner of High and Thomas Streets the building is described as Venetian Gothic.  The narrow central building has a date plaque of 1878.

The 1888 map indicates that the buildings had a variety of uses.  It appears that there were jewellers at street level and wholesale clothing businesses above.  In keeping with the changing character of the Northern Quarter it seems that the street level use is now aimed at the demand for food and drink venues.
