International House - 82 - 86 Deansgate

Number 82 to 86 Deansgate used to be known as International House.  This mixed-use building, with two restaurants at street level and offices above, has the appearance of one built in 1970.

The building backs on to Parsonage Gardens.

In the 1970s the building contained the Studio 6-7-8-9 cinema and a Co-op shop.  When I created this page, I found the numbering of the studio a bit of a puzzle.  A few doors away was the Deansgate Cinema (Now the Wetherspoons pub The Moon Under Water”) which appeared to house Studios 1 and 2.  That left Studios 3 - 4 and 5 missing for a full set.  You will notice in the image of the building from 1976 that it is called "New Deansgate House".  Click on the link below to see the image.

A solution to the problem is provided by John Chamberlain.  He explains that, “… the original 1-5 was on Oxford Rd in what is now “the Dancehouse” (pretty much opposite where the old BBC was).  The 2 screen cinema (the ABC) which is now the pub The Moon Under Water was not connected to 6-9 until the two separate chains (Star who owned the studios and ABC who owned the 2 screen cinema) were both bought out by Cannon in the mid-80s."

International House replaced a building that contained the Deansgate Arcade.  The map segment below is based on the Goad map of 1888 and shows the block between Blackfriars Street and St. Mary's Street.  The Deansgate Arcade is shaded in red.

Below you can see the buildings in this vintage postcard image.

The link below shows the arcade in 1955 just prior to its demolition.
