Ashton House - Former Lodging House Ashton House is a
student residence building for the Manchester
Metropolitan University. It offers en-suite
accommodation to 54 students. It was built by
Manchester Corporation between 1908 and 1910 as a model
lodging house for women. The architect was Henry
Price who was also responsible for other city projects
such as the Victoria Baths and the Hydraulic Pump House
in Spinningfields that became the People's History
Museum. At that time it offered shelter to 222
women who slept in dormatories with individual
cubicles. The women cooked for themselves in
communal kitchens. It is built in an Arts and
Crafts style in red brick and terracotta and has its
name on its castilated gable end.
