Sharp Street Ragged School The Sharp Street Ragged
School was actually founded in 1853 but this buildng was
built in 1869. Clare Hartwell in the Pevsner Guide
to Manchester says that "it is said to retain a
little-altered interior with ground-floor partitions
which divided the reception class of wild street
children from those who have been subdued."
The map below shows a
school on this site but the map was drawn between 1844
and 1847 at least 6 years before the Sharp Street Ragged
School was founded and at least 21 before the building
above was built. The school on the map is called
the Angel Meadow School.
