Albion Mill and Ovale, Ancoats

The Albion Mill, above, forms part of this complex  This redeveloped 19th Century mill is described by the developers as follows, "The offices within Albion Mill feature all the technology that a 21st century company requires whilst being set in the grandeur of a late 19th century mill. Amenities include ability to fit air conditioning, broadband cabling and fully wired suites, VDU compliant and feature lighting to all office areas, male, female and disabled toilets on each floor, flexible floor plans suitable for open plan or cellular configurations, kitchen facilities on each floor, and 24 hour security systems".

Behind the old mill, are modern residential blocks.  The most prominent of these is the Ovale, a spherical glass shell with a central void.  The building, designed by the architect Andrew Wallace, contains 36 apartments.

In 1851 this site was an island with Pollard Street on the north side and a branch canal encircling the other three sides.  Sitting on the island was the cotton mill owned by J. & J.  L.  Gray.
