Vulcan
Mill, Pollard Street
The Vulcan Mill sits across the Ashton Canal from
Islington Wharf (to the left of the chimney in the image
above). It dominates the Great Ancoats Street end
of Pollard Street. It was once John Hetherington’s
cotton factory. Today the redeveloped former mill
offers both residential and commercial space.   The map below, dated
1851, show that a chemical works owned by Swindells
& Williams occupied the site.
