Bridge 5 Mill - Beswick Street - Ancoats

Bridge 5 Mill sits beside the Rochdale Canal on Beswick Street in Ancoats.  In 2011 it is home to the Manchester Environmental Resource Centre (MERCI),  "an organization set up in 1996 by a group of campaigners in Manchester who were frustrated by the lack of support, positive vision and available resources to make Manchester a more sustainable city".  MERCI's website says of Bridge 5 Mill that it is, "Manchester's first Centre for Change. This converted mill in Ancoats provides a focal point for debate and action around sustainability. It is home to a range of charities, campaign groups and green businesses. The centre provides community resources including conference and meeting rooms, a library, equipment hire and offices for voluntary groups and social enterprises."

If you click on the link below you can see this corner in 1962 when a petrol station occupied the site.

In 1928 the site was somewhat different.  Below you can see my version of a map drawn at that time.  There were two houses where there is a "garden" today.  The mill building was being used as a Boy's Club.

Bridge 5 Mill is connected to what was called the "Hold Mill" in 1928.  At that time it was home to the Manchester Clothing Company.
