Thompson
House - Pollard Street Thompson House sits on
Pollard Street adjacent to the Hope Mill in
Ancoats. When I took this image in February of
2011, this commercial building has Kimgary Fabrics as
its occupant. A date stone above a front door
suggests that the building dates from 1863.
A clue to its history
comes from consulting old maps. Below you can see
my version of a map dated 1886, some 23 years after
today's building was erected. In 1886 H. Goldsmith
& Co had a furniture factory that backed onto the
Ashton Canal. That building has gone but a car
park with an identical shape sits behind Thompson
House. The map, as you can see, shows that Thomson
House was home to Engineers, Offices and a Stationary
Warehouse. It isn't clear if this building was
part of Goldsmith's Furniture Factory or just its
neighbour.
Goldsmith's furniture
factory is gone although there is a car park behind
Thompson House that has the same shape as the former
factory.
