Victoria

In 1897 as part of a huge slum clearance program, the
Manchester Corporation ran a competition and Spalding
& Cross won with a design for this five storey
tenement block that has a central courtyard. Inside,

Pevsner says that
"Originally the building contained 235 two-room and 48
single-room flats. They were paired on each side of a
communal lobby with a sink and water closet. The
turrets contained communal laundries and drying
rooms.....it was the first municipal housing in
Manchester."
