George Leigh Street

If you walk up George Leigh Street, in Ancoats, beside the Daily Express Building, you find a series of terraces running parallel to Oldham Road.

The Manchester Pevsner says of them that they were 3-bedroomed dwellings that "conform to the moral idea for housing" - in that they were able to provide for the separation of parents and children of different sexes. They add that these were never working-class houses.

One terrace faces on to George Leigh Street.  Two more terraces face each other across the pedestrian Anita Street (below).  These houses are smaller than the ones on George Leigh Street.

A taller terrace faces out onto Oldham Road.  It comprises street level shops and flats above.

Built in 1898 – 99 this three storey block was constructed of machine bricks and terracotta.

The development can be seen in the aerial photograph below from the 1940s.
