New Islington Free School

New Islington Free School opened as a single-form entry primary school in September 2013. Since then it has been in temporary accommodation in Ancoats.  The 2015 OFSTED Report said of the school that, "... It was set up in response to demand from the local community, with support from Manchester City Council and Manchester Grammar School, to fulfill the need for primary school places in the regeneration area of New Islington."

When this building, beside the Rochdale Canal, is finished the school will be moving in.  The architects say of the building that, "... The design is for a new build primary school to accommodate 420 for New Islington Free School. It is located within the New Islington Regeneration. This proposal is a linear building orientated parallel to the New Islington Marina, providing the classrooms with an inspirational view for the pupils. ...

.... The entrance connects to a double height internal street that is intended as a break-out teaching space. A dramatic skylight is proposed across the entire length enabling the heart of the building to be flooded with daylight. All rooms within the building are accessible from this space. The external appearance of the building has been crafted so as to visually engage with the neighbouring listed mills without resorting to pastiche."
