The Cross Keys Pub, Radium Street

The Cross Keys pub occupies the corner of Radium and Jersey Street and is both closed and in a sorry state.  The Planning Department of Manchester Council received a planning application on the 24th of February, 2010, which sought permission to demolish the pub and replace it with a four-storey retail and office block.  However on the 21st of April, 2010, permission was refused.  The building continues to be "To Let".

Beside the pub, off Radium Street, is School Court a name with no apparent reason in 2010 because there is no school in the vicinity.  However, in 1851 a school did exist between this "court" and the branch canal that passed beneath Radium Street.

In this map extract you can see that the school was St. Paul's Church School.

The school is gone and today the site is occupied by an unprepossessing commercial building, see below.

What you will also gather, from the maps above, is that in the 19th century the Cross Keys pub wasn't located on the corner of the street.  It was infact further along the block on Jersey Street.  Apparently at some point it was called "The Amalgamation" but in 1851, as the maps indicate, it was The Cross Keys.  You may also note that Radium Street was called German Street in those days.  The name changed because of public sentiment aroused during WWI.
