The
Premier Inn, Dale Street
This new Premier Inn on the
corner of Dale Street and Lena Street in
Manchester's city centre was designed by the
architectural practice of Roger Stephenson.
The architect's website says of the design that, "The
concept is based on a solid mass that has been
formed and carved away, both relating to the
urban context and to minimise the visual impact
of the hotel. The carving of the mass has been
implied with the use of a different material,
which provides a subtle variation and interest
to the treatment of the facades."
The 12-storey building accommodates 193 bedrooms,
a Thyme Restaurant and five meeting rooms.
******************** In the 1840s this site was
a wharf beside a basin of the Rochdale
Canal. The only buildings on the site
were warehouses. Below is a map of the
site drawn in 1844. I added the blue
colouring to the canal to make it show up
better. The site of the new hotel is
indicated by the red arrow.
Little had changed when the Goad Map of the area was drawn circa 1888 (my version is shown below) This continued to be
the case in the 1950s as you can see from
the aerial image and old photograph below
show.
The development of the
site was rather a slow process. You
can see it at an early stage in the image
below, taken from the same place as the
old one above.
