Laystall Street

This building on Laystall Street behind the former ILVA store ermains a bit of a puzzle to me.  It may be the building referred to by Clare Hartwell in the Pevsner Architectural Guide for Manchester as a former warehouse designed by M. Seanor. She describes this building as having, "an extravagant front of richly moulded terracotta" which certainly fits.  The building apparently belonged to a company manufacturing firebricks and terracotta and Clare Hartwell speculates that the front of the building acted as an advertisement of their wares.  She believes that the building dates from 1880.  The date stone at the top of the building says, "Established 1838".

This may reflect the fact that the company was established in 1838.
