The Wentwood Apartments

This large warehouse building on Newton Street between Postal Street and Houldsworth Street certainly looks as if it was designed by Clegg & Knowles.  Today it is known as The Wentwood, an apartment building that is described as, "...  a stylish and spacious grade 2 listed Victorian warehouse conversion. It has been transformed into 108 luxury apartments, all with high ceilings and large windows that reflect its previous use as a prestigious Ministry of Defence office."

In 1844 this site was occupied by the Newton Street Mill's Cotton Picking Works and connected to the main mill by a passage that went under Newton Street.  There was a timber yard inside the block.  Behind it ran Mushroom Street and there were dwellings between Mushroom Street and Dean Street.

By 1888 The Newton Street Mill's Cotton Picking Works had been replaced by the warehouse we see today.  You will note that the street names have also changed over the years.  Ancoats Street on this map is now Houldsworth Street and Warwick Street is now Postal Street.  The houses still existed beyond Mushroom Street.

Today the houses are gone and a modern extension has been added to the back of the warehouse.
