Marlsbro House Hotel

This rather incongruous looking checker-board hotel sits on the corner of Hilton Street and Newton Street.  In 1844 the site was occupied by the Newton Street Iron Works.  By 1888 there was a building that housed the J. Critchley & Co Umbrella Factory on the 1st floor, the H. C. Forshaw Costume Factory on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and a Shirt Factory on the 4th floor.

This hotel is probably a redevelopment of the factory that sat here in 1888.  Pevsner suggests that the checker-board render hides a red brick building.  The photograph below would seem to verify that.
