House Hotel![]() This rather incongruous
looking checker-board hotel sits on the corner of Hilton
Street and Newton Street. In 1844 the site was
occupied by the Newton Street Iron Works. By 1888
there was a building that housed the J. Critchley &
Co Umbrella Factory on the 1st floor, the H. C. Forshaw
Costume Factory on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and a Shirt
Factory on the 4th floor.
![]() This hotel is probably a
redevelopment of the factory that sat here in
1888. Pevsner suggests that the checker-board
render hides a red brick building. The photograph
below would seem to verify that.
