St. James's House - Charlotte Street There are a number of
buildings in the Manchester city centre with the name
St. James's House. This one is located on
Charlotte Street between George Street and Faulkner
Street.
It was designed by the
architectural practice of Grunton & Grunton and
built in 1964.
In 2003 the building was acquired by Charlotte
Street Properties. Following its
acquisition another 26,000 sq ft were added and
extensive refurbishment and re-cladding took place. The name derives from St. James' Church which once occupied the site. St. James' Church
was established in 1786 but declining populations
and church congregations resulted in its closure
circa 1854. By the time the aerial
photograph below was taken, in 1953, the church
was a distant memory. The site is indicated
by a purple shaded area.
