Portland Tower



Beyond the Princess Hotel and Telephone House on Portland Street in the image above, you can see the Portland Tower, marked in the photograph with a red dot. 



Originally the building was called St. Andrew's House.  It was designed by Leach Rhodes Walker and built in 1962 for the Scottish Widows.  It is comprised of a 21 storey tower over a 2 storey podium.  Today the building is part of the Bruntwood holding of office space in the city.





In 1888 the site was occupied by a warehouse block as you can see in the sketch map below. 



During the Manchester Blitz the building was destroyed and the site was cleared as you can see in this RAF aerial photograph.  The site is bounded by a red line.
