The Malmaison Hotel The Malmaison Hotel web
site says this of the hotel:
"This one time elegant warehouse in Manchester is now a gorgeous boutique hotel with a very theatrical style. With its red and black décor, we think it’s reminiscent of the Moulin Rouge. It’s certainly stylish, whatever colour you’re hoping to paint the town." In a former life
this was the warehouse of Joshua Hoyle and Sons
Limited, as the terracotta plaque indicates.
The building was designed by Charles Heathcote and
built in 1904.
Below you can see the
building prior to its conversion into a hotel. You
can clearly see the staggered windows of the stair tower
at the corner of Piccadilly and Auburn Street.
Below are two images
showing the stair tower today and the original entrance
which now provides access to the Brasserie.
The Rochdale Canal
passes beneath the building on its way from the Dale
Street Basin to its junction with the Bridgewater Canal,
in Castlefield.
The entrance on
Piccadilly incorporates a new extension by Darby
Associates, who were responsible for the conversion of
the old building.
