The Grand

The Grand on Aytown Street has had 3 lives. It started out as a cotton warehouse built in 1867 by Mills and Murgatroyde for A Collie and Company.

Thirteen years later it was converted into The Grand Hotel.

Then in in recent years Ian Simpson Architects, who were responsible for 1 Deansgate, Urbis and the Beetham Tower, were commissioned to convert it into an apartment building.

The Ian Simpson web site says this of The Grand: "ISA has converted an 1860s former warehouse and hotel into 115 apartments. The stone and brick elevations have been carefully restored and a dramatic mansard and glazed rooftop structure have been added. The subdivision of the space is the key to the scheme to allow the original volumes to read whilst accommodating smaller cellular rooms. The original courtyard has been covered by a new glass roof and provides a focus for internal balconies and communal space. The hotel's original ballroom structure has been retained within the courtyard. New build link apartments have also been provided, spanning over new Circus Street and connecting the Grand Apartments with the new build 726 space car park."
