The distinctive
pyramidal tower on Dover Street surmounts the former
Manchester High School for Girls. The tower
mirrors Waterhouse's University buildings and
Worthington's Nicholl's Hospital. The High School
for Girls was designed in 1881 by Mills and Murgatroyd,
the architects of the Royal Exchange.
The blue plaque below
is attached to the front of the Dover Street Building.
****************** Attached to the
Dover Building is this white concrete and brick
"extension" designed by Cruikshank and Seward and
built in 1966-67. At one point it was the
Social Science and Economics Building for the
University of Manchester. In May of 2010 it
appears to be empty awaiting refurbishment. A
planning permission letter is attached to the front
door outlining the proposal.
