14 Byrom Street
14 Byrom Street is described in
references as The Old Schoolhouse". The carving
above the door shows the date 1896 and the letter "V",
perhaps referring to Victoria. is carved above the
date.
Until recently it was
home to the Rechabite Friendly Society. The web site
historyshelf.org says this about the Rechabites.
"The International Order of Rechabites take their
name from an eponymous biblical tribe, who were
'commanded to drink no wine' by their leader Jonadab
son of Recab, and successfully resisted when tempted
to do so. Taking their inspiration from the story,
the founders of the Order opened their first 'Tent'
or branch in Salford on 25 August 1835, in effect
relaunching and subsuming an older Salford
Temperance Burial Society."
A listing of friendly Societies says: "This society offers financial services to people who are non-drinkers. More than an alcohol-free friendly society, its members share a common vision of a better way to live and a truly mutual society." Close Window |
