Walkabout Hotel - Quay Street

This rather grand building on the west side of Quay Street is occupied today by the Walkabout Hotel Manchester.   The hotel features 3 separate bars that are used for various functions including product launches, office parties, private events or weddings.

A Manchester & Salford Directory for 1927 lists 13 Quay Street as belonging to the Engineering Department of the G. P. O. and a photograph in the Central Library collection shows the building in the 1970s and describes it as a Post Office Telephone Training Centre.

At the top of the pediment the royal crest is carved in stone.

The building has a number of original features.

This is the back of the building on Artillery Street.

The hotel's publicity states that the building is a former hospital.  It does bear some similarities in its architecture to the former Manchester & Salford Skin Hospital that used to be located further along this block.
