Upper Campsfield Market

There used to be two Campsfield Markets, an Upper and a Lower market, both built in 1878 by Mangall and Littlewood to the same glass and iron design. The markets were separated by St. Matthew's Church which was demolished in 1951.

In the image directly below you can see St. Matthews with the Upper Campsfield Market behind it and the Lower Market ahead.

In this image the Upper market is to the right of the curch with the former "Free Library" adjacent to it.

In the 1980s I photographed the Upper (sometimes referred to as Higher) Campsfield market and at that time is was a metal skeleton.  I'm not sure why it was in that condition whether it was under redevelopment / restoration or it had been the victim of a fire.  I suspect the former.

The Lower Market is now a museum but the Upper Market (seen above) still functions as a retail space and it is connected to a building on Deansgate that started out in life as a free library. Today the market trades in clothing, food, household items, games, as well as cosmetics.
