Vicus
Building & Sapporo
Teppanyaki
![]() On Liverpool Road,
beyond Duke Street, there is a block of modern
buildings. It begins with the Vicus Building,
seen above and below, a mixed-use complex with the
Akbar's and Salt 'n' Pepper restaurants on street
level and apartments above.
![]() Below you can see the back of the Vicus Building on Rice Street. ![]() Further down
Liverpool Road is Sapporo Teppanyaki (see
below), a sushi and noodle bar. The
Castlefield Centre, a visitor's centre built in
1993, completes the block.
![]() The end bay of the
Castlefield Centre (below right) is glazed giving
views out onto the canal basin.
![]() In the 19th Century
the block was occupied by groups of residential
dwellings. Below you can see my version of a
1889 map of the site.
![]() These buildings were
still there in the 1950s, as you can see in the
aerial photograph below, although the pub on the
corner of Wellington Place and Rice Street was gone.
